Onboard Diagnostic System

The Saratoga has an Onboard Diagnostic System. To engage the diagnostic-mode you have to

  • insert the ignition key into the ignition lock
  • do not start the engine
  • Within five seconds:
    switch the key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON
    (ON is NOT START!)
  • leave it on !
  • watch the 'Check Engine'-light in the lower/right corner of the instrument-cluster
It will take from 2 - 5 seconds before signaling begins
  • count, how often it flashes
    • The maximum number of 'flashes' is 9 per digit
    • Each code consists out of two digits
    • There is a short pause between the 2 digits of a code
    • There is a longer pause between two codes
  • Code 55 ends the sequence, after this the 'Check Engine' light stays dark
On my car I get the 3 codes: 12, 33 and 55, which looks like this:

flash (pause) flash flash
(long pause)
flash flash flash (pause) flash flash flash
(long pause)
flash flash flash flash flash (pause) flash flash flash flash flash
(stays dark)

Look here - that's how it goes: Check Engine Light

This means:

12 = Battery or computer recently disconnected
(true: installed a new battery some month ago)

33 = Air conditioning clutch relay circuit open or shorted
(this car had no A/C, so it must be open)

55 = End of Codes

An almost complete listing of the codes (along with some other helpful informations) may be found in the Chrysler FAQ Part 3.
